The media has historically given hypnosis/hypnotherapy a bad rap. (To put it mildly.) This is unfortunate because hypnotherapy can be the most healing experience for individuals who struggle with chronic life issues. Hypnotherapy is a specialized therapeutic technique that can help individuals resolve inner conflicts, and dissolve inner trauma.
Hypnotherapy involves encouraging someone to enter a hypnotic trance. A hypnotic trance is NOT a “zombie-like state” in which you are easily mind-controlled. It is a state of consciousness in which you are deeply relaxed, hyperfocused on stimuli around you, and are more open to suggestion (not controlled by suggestion).
Individuals spend 80% of their day going in and out of hypnotic trance everyday.
In other words, a hypnotic trance is the state of being that we normally fall into when we are sleeping, meditating, listening to music, immersed in a book, or just driving through an everyday route. During hypnotherapy a clinician will induce this state in order to achieve self-discovery, relief from stress, or understanding of negative thought patterns that one has learned from an early age. However, this process is done safely and in full collaboration with the client. The mind will never go there without your permission to do so.
Hypnotherapy has been effective in helping with different issues:
- Trauma
- Childhood abuse
- Poor self-esteem
- Attachment issues
- Chronic anxiety
- Anger management
- Severe depression
- Some physical ailments
- Addiction
- Conflicts in marriage and relationships
“In a hypnotherapy session, clients are conscious; they are awake, participating and remembering.” – Cassie Selewske, certified hypnotherapist
Hypnotherapy is a practice that gained widespread scientific attention in 1880, and was popularized by many – including Milton Erickson in the 1950s. It was used frequently in caring for veterans of war during World War I and II. Since the practice has been refined with time, hypnotherapy has been helpful in allowing survivors to re-examine their traumas – or experiences of strong emotions – in a safe way so that life-long behavioral patterns can be changed systematically. Most clinicians recommend using hypnotherapy when normal talk therapy has not helped. Hypnotherapy can help someone get back their own sense of agency, and peace, by letting go of limiting beliefs and thoughts from the past.

“Through the ‘memory chip’ that has been laid down in the subconscious mind, we can trace back the experiences and subconscious decisions we made as children that may be leading us to the behavior that is no longer healthy for us.”
– Diane Zimberoff, Hypnotherapist Wellness Institute
